According to the National Council on Aging, 43% of single recipients aged 65+ depend on Social Security for 90% or more of their income. For older adults on a fixed income, a little bit of help can go a long way.
For Helen, a Cicero resident, Solutions for Care (SFC) was there when she needed them. During one of SFC's offsite enrollment days, Helen was able to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) which helped her reduce her electric and utility bills.
The LIHEAP program, like many other benefit programs offered by SFC, helps thousands of older adults in Illinois make ends meet by providing financial help with utilities. The ability to free up money from one's utility payments makes it easier to purchase other items necessary for a healthy lifestyle.
"Having the help with my gas and light helps me out to get things that I cannot get – like groceries, things people take for granted like toilet paper and trash bags."
With the help of Solutions for Care and the LIHEAP program, says she feels truly blessed.
